Из русских государственных деятелей конца XIX начала ХХ века именно С. Ю. Витте, министр финансов в 1892-1903 гг. и председатель Совета Министров в октябре 1905 — апреле 1906 гг., был одним из главных архитекторов дальневосточной политики России в царствование Александра III и Николая II.[1] Во многом благодаря Витте Россия втянулась в экономическое и политическое соперничество с европейскими державами и Японией на огромной территории Китайской империи.

The rivalry over the Korean peninsula, and the so-called ‘Korean problem’ were in reality as much the tinderboxes from which the Russo-Japanese War ignited as the rivalry over Manchuria. Korean problem has originated with the Seoul-Ŭiju (Kyŏngŭi) Railway and the Yalu timber concessions. And it eventually led to the Russo- Japanese rivalry around the Yongampo Incident happened in the Korean bank of the Yalu River between February, 1903 and February, 1904.

This study analyzes Koreans’ perception of Russia during the latter period of the 19^th century. It is a well-known fact that the growing threat of Western imperialism from the middle of the 19^th century onwards spurred Korea to pursue the reform of its traditional ruling structure internally, while at the same time, adopting an independent course toward the outside world. Nevertheless, with the completion of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905 serving as the impetus, Korea soon found itself becoming a protectorate of Japan, and eventually falling under the Japanese colonial yoke.
